Biker bars have been a fixture of gritty, roadside stops for many years. But a couple of new locations have cropped up in the west coast that defy the tradition. Well designed spaces fueled, not by alcohol, but with caffein. The first being Sydney, Australia’s Deus ex Machina in Venice, CA – an ideal city for the expansion considering how well it applies to Deus’s inventory of motorcycles, surfboards and bikes. They converted a former flower shop into a masculine, concrete and wood covered space for retail and lounging, accompanied with a bar serving coffee from Handsome Coffee Roasters. The second shop opened this week in Portland, OR. See See Motorcycles Coffee Co, is a biker themed coffee shop owned by Thor Drake, a daredevil, builder, and vintage bike proponent. He’s been part of the custom bike scene in Portland for years hosting art exhibits and The One Motorcycle Show. It’ll be interesting to see the development of these two shops and how it will inevitably spawn other motorcycle / coffee spots.

We popped over to Portland, OR, for a chance to hang once again with the boys of SeeSee Motorcycles and Bell Helmets for their much anticipated “One Show.”  Thor Drake from SeeSee and partners have put on this show for the past couple years and it draws quite a crowd. The show runs two days in the NE quadrant of Portland, February 10th and 11th.

I was able to get a shot of the prototype of Tom Burney’s “Swift Cycle.”  Tom engineered the Swift to remain in Portland’s legal speed class for their abundance of bike lanes.  Based on an early board-tracker design and equipped with a 35cc Subaru single, the bike has a classic look yet reliable performance.

ICON had their own sectioned booth at the show with a ‘Utilitarian’ theme on their builds.  This Sportster was outfitted with a dual Supertrapp exhaust, pack mounts, and of all things… a Warn winch.
